· Drink plenty of extra fluids while you are taking this medication.
· Do not crush or chew the tablets. Swallow them whole or break them in half where they are scored to make them easier to swallow.
· Guaifenesin is an expectorant. It is used to break up congestion and mucous and to help you breathe more easily. Guaifenesin thins mucous, increases the lubrication of your respiratory tract (lungs, nose, and throat), and it increases the removal of mucous.
· Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. It suppresses an area in your brain that causes you to cough.
· Safe Tussin 30 is used to treat the symptoms of the common cold and of infections of your sinuses, your lungs, and your throat when they are accompanied by a nonproductive, bothersome cough.
· Safe Tussin 30 may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
· Do not take Safe Tussin 30 if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. A very dangerous drug interaction could occur, leading to serious side effects.
· Safe Tussin 30 is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether Safe Tussin 30 will harm an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.
· It is also not known whether Safe Tussin 30 passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
· Safe Tussin 30 has not been approved for use in children younger than 2 years of age.
· Take Safe Tussin 30 exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
· Take each dose with a full glass of water. Try to increase your fluid intake during the day to help relieve your congestion.
· Take Safe Tussin 30 with food if it upsets your stomach.
· Do not crush or chew the tablets. Swallow them whole or break them in half where they are scored to make them easier to swallow.
· To ensure that you get a correct dose, measure the liquid form of Safe Tussin 30 with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not with a regular tablespoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist where you can get one.
· Store Safe Tussin 30 at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
· Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.
· An overdose of Safe Tussin 30 is not likely to occur. If you do suspect an overdose, call an emergency room or poison control center near you.
· Symptoms of an overdose include slow breathing, hallucinations, and hyperactivity.
· Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Safe Tussin 30 may cause dizziness. If you experience dizziness, avoid these activities.
· No serious side effects from Safe Tussin 30 therapy are expected. Stop taking Safe Tussin 30 and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives).
· Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Safe Tussin 30 and talk to your doctor if you experience ·dizziness or headache; ·nervousness, restlessness, hyperactivity, or insomnia; or ·nausea or stomach upset.
· Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
· Do not take Safe Tussin 30 if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. A very dangerous drug interaction could occur, leading to serious side effects.
· Do not take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications for coughs, colds, allergies, dieting, or sleep unless your doctor or pharmacist approves. Many other preparations contain guaifenesin, dextromethorphan, or other similar drugs, and you may accidentally overdose.
